Happy new moon, lovlies!
I made a little video poem for you all. I filmed it on a recent summer afternoon in my back yard, when two huge bees caught my attention in the Russian sage.
Summer light gathering
I was a girl who crossed borders
simply by being born into her body.
I am a woman sending down
roots and reaching up into the pockets
of air and dreams and discontent
that surround me, collecting words
like pollen, like seed. Here.
This is a poem for you, to catch
on the hem of your dress,
the cuff of your pant leg. Here, a manifesto
I send out in a million spores
soaring on the slightest breeze.
Tell me, what did you see from the corner
of your eyes? What tangles in your hair?
Do you hear that bumblebee
gathering your true name? Tell me
it doesn’t sound like unabashed joy,
clinging to the flowering stalks
that shake in laugher with every sweet
and clumsy landing.
I’m taking a fun online course called “Writing in the Weeds,” offered by herbalist sára abdullah. Each week, we learn about one or two weeds—aka plant allies—read poems, and write in response to promts. It’s really gotten my creative juices going, and this poem began there.
sara’s next offering is Plant Magic! A Journey into Plant Medicine, Lunar Rythms & More, and applications close on Wednesday (7/29). Do check it out if it’s up your alley.
Today, June 20, 2020, is #StrikeForBlackLives, a national day of strikes and protests. It’s not too late to find an event near you, or spread the word on social media.
That’s it for now. See you around the full moon, which is a very special one for me!
